Always good to go to Lees Lane to see old friends at South Normanton and tonight a fair few local celebs were in force. On the gate was Normo's Chairman Phil Bailey who was happy as usual to see me and take me money and then Secretary and Programme Editor Steve Harris.

 

I entered the Shiners Bar, where I cut the tape some years ago with Phil Bailey and had a couple of pints pre match and got talking to a few local hoppers and even sold 3 Advanced Nots Senior League Groundhop Tickets and 2 sets of Badges.

 

Outside I stepped for the kick off and had a chat with Clipstone Chairman Brett Marshall and Mr Clipstone Barry Clarke who has been quite poorly of late, so it was great to see the 74 year old looking so well and back on his feet.

 

The game kicked off and it was very even with chances at both ends, but as the game went on, it was the home side that was going closer. After 39 minutes, SHANE NEWTON fired them in to a 1-0 lead.

 

Half time came and I joined the queue in the tea bar for my pie and chips and a cuppa Oxo which went down well. The Second Half kicked off and I stood with Heanor Town's Scott Ward and Barry Clarke.

 

The game seemed to die out with passes going astray by both teams and hardly any chances, I think the majority of the crowd were just glad it didn't go in to extra time.

Since my last visit to Butt Lane, the home of Bingham Town FC, they have but two new dugouts at this Country Town ground. This venue will be the First Ground we visit on the Saturday Morning on this seasons Notts Senior League Football Groundhop..All information can be found on this LINK. Bookings are already going very well and there are now only 15 seats left on the coach. The Refreshements at this club is superb..heres part of the board

 

 

Both of todays teams having been doing well of late and before the game sat in 3rd and 4th place in the League Table, so a close game was expected.

 

Both sides set out their stalls early in the game, with them both cancelling each other out with very few chances. After 28 minutes, a throughball from the Wollaton midfield, saw Jordan Alls through on goal with the advancing home keeper stopping the ball with his hand outside of the area, leaving Referee Thomas Tolond no choice but to produce his first red card of the game.

 

Wollaton failed to test the new keeper and the score remained at 0-0 for half time.

 

In to the second Half and Wollaton looked like making the man advantage work but again Bingham proved hard to breakdown. On the hour, the ball fell to Jordan Alls inside the box with the goal at his mercy, only for him to scuff his shot well wide. After 61 minutes JORDAN ALLS made amends when from the far side of the area steered home a loose ball to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

 

Bingham didn't lay down and battled forward and on 73 minutes got a deserved equaliser when TOM SPENCER hit a rasping cross shot from the right side of the area to level the scores at 1-1. It looked now that the home side would take the game by the scruff of the neck and go on to win the game, but tired legs were beginning to set in and on 82 minutes, ADAM CAMPBELL hit a low long range shot that left the stand in keeper just watching as it hot the back of the net.

 

As we entered the final couple of minutes, there seemed to be abit of a melee over the clubhouse side of the pitch, where a second Bingham player received a red card and a Wollaton player also followed him to the changing room along with the visiting Assistant Manager. At the final whistle, another home player was dismissed for a alleged comment made.

Round One

WATNALL ATHLETIC FC 0 WEST BRIDGFORD FC 5

This was my first visit to Digby Street since the groundhop match between Kimberley MW v Keyworth United nearly 2 years ago, since then Kimberley MW first team have moved to the Stag Ground in Kimberley, whilst newly formed Watnall Athletic have moved on to Digby Street.

 

Watnall are lying second in Division Two of the Notts Senior League before todays match, whilst West Bridgford FC are unbeaten two divisions above in the Senior Division.

 

On arrival, I was met by Watnall's secretary Matt Holland and got a cuppa, whilst Hazel helped in the tea bar, had a chat with referee Colin White and with West Bridgford manager Gary Hayward.

 

The game kicked off and it was the senior division who had the upper hand and on 14 minutes, a corner from the right side made its way to DAVE ERETZ who back heeled past the keeper to make it 1-0. It was soon to be 2-0 when PAT NEWSOME doubled the visitors lead.

 

Watnall seemed a bit unsettled as Bridgford showed why there was a 2 division gap and on 38 minutes, TOM COOKE made it 3-0.

 

Half time came and went and again it was the visitors who pressed forward and on 51 minutes, AARON LARGE made it 4-0, but the homesters didn't seemed too happy about the goal standing and asked the referee why, but Colin White stood his ground and explained why he had allowed the goal.

 

On 70 minutes, West Bridgford went 5-0 up when PAT NEWSOME hammered home his second of the game. Both clubs made subs and Watnall created their first chance of the game from a corner which was handled well by the keeper.

 

As we were nearly full time, the ref blew and ran towards the far side of the pitch as all players were getting involved in a scuffle, the ref to his credit divided the two sets of players and let things cool down before approaching his assistant and then awarded two red cards to the two West Bridgford subs, ending good game on a sour note.

 

Must mention I felt Referee Colin White had a superb game that could have got out of hand at stages.

 

I must thank both Matt Holland for the kind £5 donation and also the same to West Bridgford Manager Gary Hayward for the same, with the goals scored today, it now takes the Charity of Support Dogs total to £277.25

SUCCESSFUL DAY IN BEDS

Bedfordshire County League

 

For the past three seasons, Craig Dabbs has organised the Bedfordshire County League Day Hop in October, it has always been run well and Craig deserves the praise that he gets, the crowds were decent at this seasons Hop, but it would be great to always see some more hoppers there like all hops.

 

As Hazel was in Preston with her daughter Sarah, her brother Colin offered to take me, so I could set up the Charity Stall, he arrived at 5.40am and after loading the car, we headed to Bedford and arrived at the first ground in Shefford at 8.15am to find Terry Hall and the gates locked, but at 8.30am, someone arrived to let us in and the club kindly allowed us to set up in their smart new clubhouse. This match saw the best crowd of the day and a new crowd record for the Bedford County League of 189, where Shefford Town & Campton beat Pavenham 4-2. The bacon cobs were lovely and a very good progressing club.

 

We then headed about 7 miles down the road to the Wilstead, where the sat nav took us off the Bedford Road and then took us back on it via a de-tour of the village, on arrival at this club, they were ready with Burgers/Hot Dogs, massive portions of cakes, which I couldn't have, but Colin insisted on telling everyone how good the Chocolate cake was, before tucking in to a apple cake later in the game. Here I set up and sold the clubs programmes as well in front of a crowd of 147(I think). Very friendly club that really did well and on the pitch they beat Ickwell & Old Warden 5-2.

 

It was only 4 miles to the next ground so we followed Terry Hall to Meltis Albion, a nice ground with a nice committee, this was the only club to do a raffle and I won a tarot card/book set, whilst Colin won a box of chocolates. We set up here in the pavilion and also sold the clubs programmes. Here food department was Cottage pie which I tooked in to before the Hoppers arrived and nearly went back for seconds, but did think of my diet, so polished it down with a nice cold pint of cider. On the pitch, the homesters didn't do that well, as they lost to Marabese Ceramics 2-1 in front of a crowd of 141.

 

The charity stall did well and we raised £64 on the day and also sold 27 more Advanced Tickets for the Notts Senior League Groundhop, so a Big Thankyyou to everyone and to the cubs for allowing me to set up, but a great thankyou to Craig for all the work he puts in, I know at first hand how difficult it can be organising a event like this for it to go like clockwork.

BEDFORDSHIRE LEAGUE GROUNDHOP INFO

This coming Saturday is the Bedford Groundhop which organised by Craig Dabbs.

The Aroundthegrounds Charity Programme Stall will be in attendance, so all donations of funds are always greatly welcomed.
Also at the stall, I will be selling the Notts Senior League Groundhop Tickets, please note that the coach is already more than half full.

then the Second match is Wilstead v Ickwell & Old Warden this ko's at 13.45. The address is the Jubilee Playing Fields which is on Bedford Road I think MK45 3HE ..

the final match is Meltis Albion v Marabese Ceramics at 1615. This is in the heart of Bedford on Miller Road MK42 9NY..

FOUR GOAL NEEDHAM STUNS BURTON JOYCE

Sometimes you have a feel to go to a match that you think may be a good one and this proved just that, a local derby with the clubs only 1/2 a mile apart and two decent sides. Went to this match also I needed a quick update as Burton Joyce are one the host clubs on this seasons Notts Senior League Groundhop..see the link for more information HERE

 

Both sides started off very strongly and went direct for goal, but it was the visitors who got first advantage after 5 minutes, when JAMES NEEDHAM fired home. This seemed to spur Southbank on and they began to take control and after 17 minutes, Mo Maghrbi played the ball to JAMES NEEDHAM who fired home from a acute angle to double his sides lead.

Within 2 minutes, it was 3-0 to the visitors, when LUKE PICKARD scored.

 

27 minutes gone and SAM BUCKLE gave a lifeline to Burton Joyce when netting, but the 3 goal advantage was restored on 39 minutes, when JAMES NEEDHAM completed his hat trick to make it 4-1.

 

Last season, I saw Selston go in at half time 3-0 down to Selston and they pulled it back to 3-3, could they do it again in this match.

 

Burton Joyce began the Second Half fighting back and in the 57th minute, MARK BUCKLE reduced the arrears to 4-2. After 72 minutes, a long range shot by MATTHEW HAYES found its way through a crowded penalty area to make it 4-3 and set up a tense finish to this cup tie.

 

After 76 minutes and Burton Joyce were back on level terms at 4-4 when SAM BUCKLE fired home.

 

In to extra time, this cup tie went and both sides had early chances, before Southbank hero JAMES NEEDHAM fired home the winner after 97 minutes. In the final minute of extra time, Burton Joyce nearly forced the game to penaltys when they struck the crossbar.

 

Must add that Referee Andy Benner had a good game,  allowing the game to flow.
